After speaking with Puerto Rican evacuee families during a conference call set up by the Pioneer Valley Project this morning, U.S. Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren have sent a letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency requesting an extension of temporary shelter assistance for families being asked to leave hotels tomorrow by 11 a.m.

“Power outages like the one last night make it so that evacuees face additional difficulties learning the habitability status of their former homes, and plans to travel — if possible — back to Puerto Rico,” the letter reads.

Power outages have been widespread on Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria last fall, and restoration efforts were set back Wednesday when a private contractor operating an excavator hit a major transmission line and knocked out electricity across the island.
