As the site of the largest military construction project this year, Hanscom Air Force Base is an important resource that is not currently a target for closure, the civilian head of the Air Force said Thursday.

Speaking alongside U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren during a visit to Massachusetts, Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson said the Air Force is spending about $225 million on construction at the base and the MIT Lincoln Laboratory.

“It’s a huge investment for us, a tremendous commitment to Hanscom as a base,” Wilson said.

Hanscom had never been outright targeted for closure, but observers feared that it one day might fall to the same base realignment and closure, or BRAC, process that closed Fort Devens in 1996.
