Elizabeth Warren: GOP Agenda for Women Not Just Wrong, It’s Dangerous

Somerville, MA – This weekend, the Republican senate candidate in Missouri claimed that "legitimate rape" rarely leads to pregnancy. Last year, House Republicans – including GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan - were seeking to redefine rape as "forcible rape". And just a few months ago, Republican Scott Brown and others in the Senate pushed the Blunt Amendment to allow employers to limit women's access to birth control and other reproductive services, while voting against legislation to ensure women get equal pay for equal work.

These instances make clear that the Republican agenda would be devastating for women's rights. And Scott Brown has worked hard to put Republicans in control of the Senate and the White House.

U.S. Senate candidate and consumer advocate Elizabeth Warren issued the following statement:

"Rep. Todd Akin's comments are reprehensible. I understand that Scott Brown and other Republicans want to pretend Todd Akin is an isolated individual, but he is clearly in line with the Republican agenda. The agenda of the Republican Party is to limit access to health care services. It's to deny women equal pay for equal work. It's to cut funding for Planned Parenthood. And it's to select as a vice presidential nominee someone who co-sponsored legislation with Rep Akin to redefine 'rape.'

"Brown has been right in the middle of this through his support for the Blunt amendment, his opposition to equal pay legislation, his endorsements of Paul Ryan on the Republican ticket and his work for a Republican majority in the Senate."
